Open Air theatre in Bad Kötzting:
classical drama in the Bavarian language

For some time already, Bad Kötzting’s open air theatre festival has been the outstanding event offering amateur theatre at its best in Eastern Bavaria.

The underlying idea is to translate the texts of classics into the Bavarian language and then present them to a large public – a unique and successful concept. In 2010, we will revive "The Beggar’s Opera".

The Beggar´s Opera

The Play

As a “Musical Comedy” in Bavarian dialect, “The Beggar’s Opera” introduces a new chapter in the field of amateur theatre. This colourful play is set in the underworld of crooks, where Peachum, the king of beggars, and his wife have to face the fact that their naïve daughter Polly has fallen in love with Macheath, a gangster, and marries him secretly. They want to get rid of this unwanted son-in-law at all costs.

The latter can’t give up his playmates from the red light district, but they betray him and he’s caught with the help of Lockit, the corrupt police chief. Lockit’s daughter, Lucy, however, helps “her Mackie” to escape from prison. But this incorrigible crook is betrayed a second time by his tarts and finally led to the gallows. … Somewhat vulgar, frivolous, outspoken and crude, but also critical, up to date, comical and not a moment boring, the premiere of 2008 with live music, songs and dances became an extraordinary success.

The original version

In 1728, John Gay ( text ) and Christopher Pepusch ( music, including popular songs and arias ) staged the “Beggar’s Opera” in London, standing the opera world of their time on its head and parodying G.F. Handel’s baroque operas without mercy. The action was set in the underworld, the main characters were a beggars’ king and a criminal – what a shock! The “Beggar’s Opera” became a big success with the public, went through a number of new versions and is still being played today. Bertold Brecht, as everyone knows, used it to write his “Dreigroschenoper”.

Bad Kötzting’s theatre group

A successful professional born in Bad Kötzting, Johannes Reitmeier, translated the text into the Bavarian language. At the moment, he is manager of the “Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern”. Under his guidance, enthusiastic amateur actors, young and old, come on stage. Roger Boggasch, for a long time musical director of the “Theater Hof”, composed and arranged the music to accompany them; costume design is in the professional hands of Antje Adamson.

The choreography was designed and rehearsed by Astrid Vosberg. Bad Kötzting’s theatre group is no newcomer to open air theatre. They’ve been at it since 1988. Even the impressive stage set, a desolate dock area, has been designed and put up by of the group themselves. Make-up, stage technique and service have reached professional standards in the mean time.

Das Pfingstlspiel

Ancient traditions as laid down by Karl B. Krämer, in a revised version by Johannes Reitmeier

Ancient traditions come alive through this impressive street theatre play. The central character, called “Pfingstl”, is a truly strange guy in a green dress of fir branches, who symbolizes fertility and growth. But before he can take over, and spring time along with him, winter and its ghosts must be chased away. The latter, however, appear in their costumes, making people afraid with their noise and menacing movements.

But the people join forces, they use fire and piercing cries to get rid of this “cold lot”. At long last, the time has come to dance around the “Pfingstl” and to celebrate the beginning of spring time.

Street theatre beginning at 09.00 p.m. in front of the Town Hall of Bad Kötzting.
Admission free

Performances:
22. / 23. May 2010
